Internationally Recognized Experts in Cryoballoon Technology

Dr. Alberto Lopez is an internationally recognized expert on cryoablation technology and has trained colleagues for over a decade.  He was the first in Houston and among the first in the nation to treat patients for an irregular heartbeat with minimally invasive cryoballoon technology that uses cold rather than heat to interrupt faulty electrical circuits in the heart. The system treats refractory recurrent symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), a serious heart rhythm disorder that affects millions of Americans.

“With cryo, the balloon adheres to the heart and does not move. There is less chance of unintended damage and less chance of clotting. In most cases, you only have to deliver one or two energy applications to achieve that, rather than the 40 or 50 small ones next to each other without leaving gaps that the heat method uses.”

National Leaders is the Minimally Invasive Hybrid Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation

Our Hybrid Atrial Fibrillation Program achieved successful outcomes using a hybrid surgical and endocardial catheter ablation procedure to treat patients with persistent or longstanding persistent atrial fibrillation (Afib). The procedure involves a minimally invasive, closed-chest epicardial ablation performed by a surgeon, combined with endocardial radiofrequency catheter ablation performed by an electrophysiologist.

“The hybrid procedure shows superior effectiveness compared with endocardial-only ablation in patients with advanced atrial fibrillation (AF). The collaboration between electrophysiologists and cardiac surgeons is the key to improving outcomes in these patients.”
